personal backgrounD

Dr. Bennett was born and raised in Vienna, Virginia. Growing up, he was always very active and greatly enjoyed sports, but unfortunately sustained a severe low back injury while in high school. His treatment ultimately required three separate surgeries in order to repair a fracture (broken vertebrae) in his lower back. In hindsight, Dr. Bennett sees this as a blessing. While he was sidelined, he discovered his passion for engineering and robotics, which was offered as an elective at his high school. He later went on to receive a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Virginia, where he was inducted into Pi Tau Sigma and Tau Beta Pi (national engineering honor societies) and the Raven Society (the university's oldest and most prestigious honorary society). Dr. Bennett served as the chapter president of Pi Tau Sigma and was named as one of three national scholarship winners from mechanical engineering students across the country.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Bennett also accepted a fellowship to the University of California, Berkeley, to use mathematical modeling to study the effects of osteoporosis on bone health. Dr. Bennett was fascinated by the possibilities of continuing to apply his engineering education to medical applications and he decided to continue his studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. There, he applied his engineering training to the field of orthopaedics, notably as it applies to biomechanics, surgical reconstruction, and implant design. He went on to pursue his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Stanford University. There he excelled. He was named to represent his program at the American Orthopaedic Association Resident Leadership Forum, served as a representative on the hospital committee for quality control, and worked as an advisor to several healthcare companies across the country. Following graduation, he elected to seek additional sub-specialty training in orthopaedic and neurological spine surgery at Emory University.

As a spine surgery patient himself, Dr. Bennett has a unique perspective on your care and what it means to suffer from conditions of the neck, back, and spine.  He and his team will work hard to develop a plan that is right for you.

In his free time Dr. Bennett enjoys hiking, skiing, and tinkering with things around the house. He lives in Winston-Salem, NC with his wife and two young children. Together they enjoy exploring the triad, going for walks at Tanglewood or Reynolda, participating in youth sports, and frequenting local restaurants and sweet shops. They are members of Hope Presbyterian Church.
